• Corneal Transplants: Nonsurgical Vision Rehabilitation

This group of corneal diseases is characterized by a thinning and distortion of the corneal surface resulting in poor vision that cannot be corrected with glasses. In some of these patients corneal contact lenses can be custom designed to fit the corneal surface. In other cases corneal contact lenses cannot be fitted or tolerated. Gas permeable scleral contact lenses may be used in this group of patients to restore vision to a functional level and delay or eliminate the need for corneal transplant surgery.

Corneal transplant surgery may be complicated by irregular healing of the corneal transplant. When this occurs vision is often poor and cannot be corrected with glasses. In some cases a custom designed corneal contact lens may be used to improve vision. In cases where a corneal lens cannot be fitted or worn a gas permeable scleral lens may dramatically improve vision and eliminate the need for additional surgery.

The ocular surface is often severely compromised in the above disorders resulting in disabling dryness, eye pain, and light sensitivity. A gas permeable scleral contact lens lubricates and protects the corneal surface while the lens is worn. By improving the corneal environment with a scleral lens, the disabling dryness, eye pain, and light sensitivity may be dramatically reduced.

Dryness following refractive surgery procedures is common. Less common is severe dryness that interferes with daily living. In patients with severe dryness a gas permeable scleral contact lens lubricates the corneal surface while the lens is worn. This can significantly improve the dry eye symptoms.
